National Activity Professionals Week 2027: activity director week dates, theme and ideas

The short answer

National Activity Professionals Week 2027 runs Monday January 25 through Friday January 29, and NAAP has published the theme as Celebrating Differences. Two things about this week are different from every other observance in a senior living building. It is five weekdays, not seven, so a Sunday to Saturday plan copied from another week will not fit. And it is the one recognition week whose natural planner is the person being recognized, which is exactly why it is the one that most often quietly does not happen. Name an owner outside the activities department in November and the rest is straightforward.

We are a nine-piece Motown and soul revue that plays senior living communities across the US, so we spend our working life with activity directors, life enrichment directors and activity aides. This page has the verified 2027 dates and theme, why the week and the day you may have seen listed do not match, a five day plan with a named owner for each day, recognition and gift ideas sorted by what they actually cost, and the parts that reliably go wrong. Put one real event behind the week

Tell us your date, your room and roughly how many people you expect. You get back an itemized quote, a hold on the date, and the vendor paperwork your administrator or management company needs before finance will cut a check. January is one of the easiest months of the year to book, which is the quiet advantage of this week.

The dates, the theme, and why sources disagree

National Activity Professionals Week is run by NAAP, the National Association of Activity Professionals, and it exists to recognize the people who design and deliver the activity, life enrichment and recreation programs in nursing homes, assisted living, memory care, adult day services and independent living. For 2027, NAAP publishes the week as January 25 to 29 with the theme Celebrating Differences.

Two details trip people up every year, and both are worth getting right before you print anything.

It is five weekdays, not seven

January 25 is a Monday and January 29 is a Friday. Most recognition weeks in senior living, National Assisted Living Week and National Skilled Nursing Care Week among them, run Sunday to Saturday, so the reflex is to build a seven day grid. Do that here and you will either invent two days NAAP did not schedule or leave two squares blank on a printed calendar residents can see. Plan five days. If you want weekend coverage, run it as a bookend rather than as part of the week.

The week and the day are not the same listing

Several third party holiday calendar sites list a separate National Activity Professionals Day in mid January, on a date that does not sit inside the NAAP week. If you plan from one of those pages you can end up celebrating on a day none of your peers, your state chapter or your corporate office are marking. When the sources disagree, use the dates NAAP publishes on its own NAP Week page. That is the version your state association will circulate.

On the theme: NAAP sets one theme for the whole week and does not assign a theme to each individual day. Any daily theme list you find, including ours further down, is somebody's suggestion rather than an official schedule, and you are free to ignore all of it. Celebrating Differences points at something specific and useful, which is that activity professionals spend their working lives adapting one program to rooms full of people with completely different histories, abilities and preferences. Recognition that reflects that will land better than recognition that could be handed to any department in the building.

The reason this week goes flat

The honoree is the person who plans everything

Walk through a senior living building in a normal year. Nurses Week, CNA Week, Administrative Professionals Day, National Assisted Living Week, the holiday staff party, the resident birthday socials, the volunteer luncheon. In most communities, one department ends up organizing nearly all of it, and it is activities. That is not a complaint, it is just what the department is for and what it is good at.

Which produces the problem specific to this observance. The one week in the year that belongs to the activity professional is the one week they cannot plan without planning their own party. So one of three things happens. They plan it anyway and it feels hollow. They quietly skip it and tell nobody. Or someone remembers on the Friday and a sheet cake appears. None of those is a budget problem. It is an ownership problem, and it is solved in one sentence written down in November.

If this owns the week What actually happens Verdict
The activity directorThey order their own gift, book their own entertainment and thank themselves on the newsletter. Staff notice.Never
Nobody, informallyRemembered late, a card circulates on Thursday, a cake on Friday. This is the most common outcome by a wide margin. The default failure
The administrator or executive directorBudget gets approved because the person who approves budget is running it, and recognition from the top carries more weight.Best
HR or the DONWorks well, especially where HR already runs Nurses Week, so the process exists and only the honoree changes.Strong
The resident councilResidents write and present the recognition themselves. The most moving version, and the cheapest, but it needs a staff member to handle logistics.Best paired with one of the above
Corporate or the management companyA branded box arrives. Fine as a supplement, weightless on its own, because nothing in it is specific to this person.Supplement only

The practical version: in November, the administrator sends one email naming who owns NAP Week, what the budget is, and the date of the anchor event. That single email is the difference between a week people remember and a sheet cake.

Monday January 25 to Friday January 29, 2027

A five day plan with a named owner for each day

Five days, one purpose each, one person responsible for each. Put a name in that last column before you circulate this, because a plan with no names attached is the version that turns into a cake on Friday. Nothing here needs more than a modest budget, and two of the five days cost nothing at all.

Day Purpose What it looks like Owner
Mon Jan 25 Make the work visible A board or hallway display of what the department actually delivered last year: number of sessions run, outings, volunteers managed, entertainers booked, birthdays celebrated. Most families and half the staff have no idea of the scale. Pull the numbers from the activity records you already keep for survey. Administrator
Tue Jan 26 Residents speak The resident council collects and reads specific thank yous naming individual staff. Specific beats warm: the aide who found the sheet music, the director who got a resident to her grandson wedding. Record or write these down, because they matter more later than on the day. Resident council president
Wed Jan 27 Give time back The single most valued item on this list and the one almost nobody does. Cover the floor so the activities team takes a real, uninterrupted lunch off the unit, or leaves two hours early. Managers and department heads run the afternoon program. It also gives leadership one afternoon of doing the job, which changes conversations for the rest of the year. DON and department heads
Thu Jan 28 Invest in the career Approve something that outlasts the week: a certification or renewal fee, a state association membership, a conference registration, a course. Announce it publicly. This is the day that reduces turnover, and it is the one item on the list a good activity director will still be talking about in June. Administrator or HR
Fri Jan 29 The anchor event One thing with real production behind it, where the activities team are guests rather than staff. A luncheon they did not set up, live music they did not book, families and residents in the room, photographs taken by someone else. The rule that makes it work: they carry nothing, set up nothing and clear nothing. Administrator

If you only do one of these, do Wednesday. Every activity professional we have ever met would take the covered shift over the gift, and it is the only item that costs nothing but staffing goodwill. If you only do two, add Thursday, because paying for a certification is the clearest possible signal that the building sees the role as a profession rather than as the people who run bingo.

Activity professionals week ideas

Ideas sorted by who has to do the work

Most published idea lists for this week are decorations and dress-up days, which is a strange thing to give a department that runs decorations and dress-up days for a living. These are sorted instead by who does the work, because the whole point is that the honoree does not.

Costs nothing

  • A written note from the administrator naming one specific thing that person did this year, copied to their personnel file.
  • Residents introduce the activities team at a community meeting and say what they do.
  • A post on the community social page with names and photographs, so families see it.
  • A letter to the corporate office or owner naming individuals, not the department.
  • Ask the team what they would change about the program, then actually change one thing.
  • Department heads cover the afternoon program so the team gets a genuine break.

Costs a little

  • Breakfast brought in on Monday and set up by someone else.
  • The supply budget released early, or a one-off addition to it with no justification required.
  • A state association membership or a NAAP membership paid for.
  • A gift card large enough to be a real evening out, not a token.
  • New equipment the team has asked for twice: a decent portable speaker, a rolling cart, a laminator.
  • Professional headshots taken for the team, which they will use for years.

Costs real money and is worth it

  • Certification or recertification fees covered in full.
  • Conference registration, including the state chapter conference, with travel.
  • An anchor event with live entertainment where the team are guests.
  • An extra paid day off, scheduled rather than vague.
  • An additional part-time activity aide, which is the answer to the problem the week is really about.

Skip these

  • A pizza party at the end of a shift the team then cleans up.
  • Branded items with the management company logo rather than the person's name.
  • A certificate with a misspelled name, which happens more than you would think.
  • Asking the activities team to decorate for their own week.
  • Recognition that names only the director when the aides did the work.
  • A dress-up day as the whole plan. Fine as decoration, weightless as recognition.

Honest numbers

What the week costs, and which budget pays

Staff recognition weeks are usually paid from an administrator discretionary line or from HR, not from the activities budget, and that matters here more than usual. If the money comes out of the activities budget, the department is funding its own recognition out of the money it needs for residents, which is worse than doing nothing.

Item Typical US cost Which budget pays Worth it?
Written recognition and resident notes$0NoneThe highest return item on the list
Covered shift so the team gets a breakStaffing onlyNursing and department headsYes, and it is what they would pick
Breakfast or lunch brought in$60 to $250Administrator discretionary or HRYes, if someone else sets up and clears
Certification or recertification feeVaries by credentialHR training and developmentThe item that reduces turnover
State chapter conference registrationVaries by stateHR training and developmentYes, and it builds a referral network
Visiting solo or duo act for the anchor$75 to $150 a setActivities or HRFine for a modest week
Full band for a combined staff and resident event$2,500 to $8,000Marketing, corporate or a foundationOnly if residents and families are in the room too

Our own packages start at $3,400, and we will say plainly that a nine-piece revue is the wrong spend on a staff-only event in January. Where it does make sense is when a community folds NAP Week into a winter event the whole building attends, with residents, families and prospective residents in the room and the activities team seated as guests. That way one budget line does two jobs, the marketing team gets photographs in a month that usually produces none, and the people being thanked are thanked in front of the people they do it for. If that is the shape you want, the senior living entertainment page covers how these afternoons are usually built.

Working backwards from January 25

When to do what

November

Name the owner

One email from the administrator: who owns NAP Week, what the budget is, the date of the anchor event. Get the certification or conference money into next year's training line while the budget is still being set, because in January it is already allocated.

December

Book and ask

Book any outside entertainment now, while January is still open. Ask the resident council to start collecting thank yous, which takes far longer than anyone expects. Quietly find out what each team member would actually value.

Early January

Build the numbers

Pull last year's activity totals from your records for the Monday display. Arrange the Wednesday coverage with nursing while the schedule is still being written, not after it is posted.

The week itself

Stay out of their way

Someone other than the activities team sets up, serves and clears every day of it. Take photographs. Send the letter naming individuals to corporate in the following week, when everyone else has forgotten.

Questions people actually search

Activity Professionals Week: common questions

When is Activity Professionals Week 2027?

National Activity Professionals Week 2027 runs Monday January 25 through Friday January 29, 2027, as published by the National Association of Activity Professionals. Note that it is five weekdays rather than a full seven day week, which catches out anyone who copies a Sunday to Saturday plan from another observance. NAAP publishes the dates on its NAP Week page each year.

What is the theme for Activity Professionals Week 2027?

NAAP has published the 2027 theme as Celebrating Differences. Unlike some observances, NAAP sets one theme for the whole week and does not assign a separate theme to each day, so the daily themes you see on other planning pages are written by the communities running them, not handed down by the association.

How do you celebrate Activity Professionals Week?

Give the week to someone who is not the honoree. The single reason this observance goes flat is that the person who would normally plan it is the person being recognized. Name an owner outside the activities department in November, put a small budget behind one anchor event, and make the recognition specific to named individuals rather than generic thanks to the department.

Is it Activity Professionals Week or Activity Professionals Day?

NAAP, the association that created the observance, publishes a full week. Several third party holiday calendar sites also list a single National Activity Professionals Day in mid January, on a different date. When the two disagree, follow the NAAP dates, because that is what your state association and your peers will be working from.

What are good gifts for activity professionals week?

Anything that reduces the job beats anything that decorates it. Paid time back, coverage so the director can take an actual lunch, a conference or certification fee, supply budget released early, and a written note from an administrator naming a specific thing that person did all outrank a mug. If you buy an object, buy one thing of real quality rather than seven branded items.

Who plans Activity Professionals Week in a senior living community?

It should be the administrator or executive director, the director of nursing, or HR, with the resident council involved. It should never be the activity director, because they are the honoree. In practice the activities department plans every other recognition week in the building, so unless someone takes this one off them in writing, it quietly does not happen.

What do activity professionals actually do?

They design and run the program of activities that a licensed community is required to provide, assess each resident individually, document participation for survey, recruit and manage volunteers, book outside entertainment, and manage a budget. In skilled nursing the role is regulated under 42 CFR 483.24(c), which requires an ongoing program based on each resident comprehensive assessment and preferences.
